MISSION OF PROJECT RECOIL

The mission of Project Recoil is to locate, close with, and heal the Invisible Wounds of War.
Gulf War Syndrome, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Traumatic Brain Injury
are the signature injuries of the War on Terror.
We are committed to raising awareness to these injuries
and supporting the veterans who are affected by them.

Rebuilding Brains

Hyperbaric Oxygenation Therapy (HBOT) is a method of administering high-dose oxygen at greater than atmospheric pressure in order to improve or correct certain conditions. In many cases, such as those involving circulatory problems, adequate oxygen can't reach the damaged area and the body's natural healing process fails to function properly. Breathing oxygen under pressure overcomes this deficit by providing an abundant supply that reaches deep into all parts of the body. The extra oxygen helps in the healing process, enhancing the body's natural ability to fight infection, build new tissue, and regenerate nerves and neurons. It’s like pressure washing infection out of your body. It is possible to rebuild a brain in 120 days with 80 HBOT 1.5 treatments. Hyperbaric oxygen has been used for more than 30 years to repair chronic brain injuries and has repaired neurological injuries from decompression sickness for more than 80 years.

A single loss of consciousness results in organic brain injury and, untreated, is the most expensive medical condition in our society. In our untreated combat veterans, this leads to shattered lives through personality changes, aberrant violent behavior, divorces, substance abuse, jail time, disability, homelessness, and far too often, domestic violence or suicide.Veterans now account for one of every five suicides in the nation. For our thousands of returning veterans from the war, this is our reality.

The RAND report of April 2008 reported at least 28% of our veterans have traumatic brain injury or post traumatic stress disorder.

Among combat arms veterans, we can expect nearly all to have had at least one concussive event or blast injury. Many have more. Five to seven is common among Marine combat units, and some have reported as many as 17 concussive blasts.

Before these veterans responded to our nation's call, they were productive, loyal citizens, and devoted family members. Many were high school football stars, Eagle Scouts, or "Voted Most Likely To Succeed." The resulting personality changes are most often attributed to PTSD, but in reality, concussive PTSD is just one symptom of an organic brain injury, coupled with the high emotional charge of events at the time of the injury. It is not mental weakness or a personality disorder These men and women were injured defending us!

Dr Paul Harch has demonstrated the safety and the feasibility of using HBOT 1.5 to treat PTSD and TBI in an IRB approved research study.

The study reinforced the historical safety and feasibility of the protocol, but at the same time significantly improved the veterans, their disabling symptoms, and quality of life. Even though HBOT 1.5 is legal and ethical for a practitioner to provide, third party payers like TRICARE and the VA have not yet consistently paid for treatment, despite the successful recovery of veterans treated. Our mission involves helping these veterans pay for treatment. Please join us to help HBOT 1.5 become standard of care! If you care to make a difference in the lives of our veterans, please contact your elected representative and tell them you support Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.
